WEBVTT
00:00:00.479 --> 00:00:05.759
I think that I may have found China's version of the village from Beauty and the Beast.
00:00:06.240 --> 00:00:22.320
The moment early in the film where Belle walks through the town and everyone starts saying bonjour, and windows fly open, and people are calling out to one another, and all the voices just begin overlapping as their daily life unfolds.
00:00:22.559 --> 00:00:26.879
That's the first thought that I had when I was walking through Chanel Village.
00:00:27.120 --> 00:00:35.039
Stone paths wind between old courtyard houses, doors are open, neighbors greet one another as you pass by.
00:00:35.280 --> 00:00:37.920
The streets are narrow and cobblestone.
00:00:38.159 --> 00:00:42.560
So cars stop at the edge of the village, and everything inside happens on foot.
00:00:42.799 --> 00:00:44.399
This is where I met Joanne.
00:00:44.640 --> 00:00:52.799
And just a quick note: the YouTube version of this episode will include photos and video clips from Chanel Village and Eight Blessings Inn.
00:00:52.880 --> 00:00:55.359
So you can really see the place that we're talking about.
00:00:55.679 --> 00:00:57.200
Everyone has a story to tell.
00:00:57.439 --> 00:01:00.479
We connect and relate to one another when we share our stories.
00:01:00.719 --> 00:01:04.159
My name is Melia Old, and I'm your host of Voices of Inspiration.
00:01:04.400 --> 00:01:09.359
Join me as I share stories of friends, family, and strangers in my everyday life and travels.
00:01:11.439 --> 00:01:17.519
Walk away from connected more than ever to those around you and ready to be the change our world needs.
00:01:17.760 --> 00:01:19.439
Everyone has a story to tell.
00:01:19.599 --> 00:01:20.719
What's yours?
00:01:25.120 --> 00:01:33.200
Chiuan moved from Hong Kong to Shanghai years ago and later chose to settle in Chinao Village, just outside Hangzhou.
00:01:33.519 --> 00:01:42.079
Here she restored a 240-year-old courtyard house and opened eight blessings in, a nine-room bed and breakfast.
00:01:42.319 --> 00:01:49.760
Before we get into the conversation, I wanted to share something that happened shortly after I arrived at the village.
00:01:50.079 --> 00:01:59.680
I had had a really bad fall before getting to Chanel, and my eye was extremely bruised and swollen, and I tried to play it off.
00:01:59.840 --> 00:02:04.719
I didn't want to make a big deal out of it, despite being in a lot of pain.
00:02:04.799 --> 00:02:06.719
And of course, it was noticeable.
00:02:07.040 --> 00:02:10.479
And more than that, I was incredibly embarrassed.
00:02:10.800 --> 00:02:14.000
Joanne wasted no time in jumping into action.
00:02:14.240 --> 00:02:20.240
She wanted to make sure I was taken care of, despite me telling her, I'll be fine.
00:02:20.479 --> 00:02:25.919
She insisted on walking me through the village to a local Chinese medicine doctor.
00:02:26.080 --> 00:02:29.520
And the entire time I kept saying, Oh, no, I'm fine, I'm fine.
00:02:29.599 --> 00:02:30.879
We don't need to go.
00:02:31.199 --> 00:02:36.159
And she completely ignored my pleas and said, No, we're going.
00:02:36.319 --> 00:02:40.800
And he examined my eye, he treated it and handed me a tube of medication.
00:02:40.960 --> 00:02:44.800
And he smiled and waved his hand when I asked how much I owed him.
00:02:45.039 --> 00:02:49.360
And after that, we stopped at a small coffee shop just down the road.
00:02:49.520 --> 00:02:59.039
And Joanne explained to them what had happened, and they immediately showed concern for me, although they would have noticed without her mentioning it.
00:02:59.199 --> 00:03:00.879
It was pretty noticeable.
00:03:01.199 --> 00:03:06.400
They made me a coffee and their dog came over and settled at my feet while I sat there.
00:03:06.560 --> 00:03:11.199
And I felt genuinely cared for, and they didn't even know me.
00:03:11.759 --> 00:03:20.240
And that moment spoke to Joanne's character, the way she pays attention and takes responsibility for the people around her.
00:03:20.479 --> 00:03:27.120
Chanel Village has been here for more than a thousand years, and you can feel that history as you walk through it.
00:03:27.360 --> 00:03:34.879
Many of the courtyard houses date back to the Ming and Qing dynasties, and they aren't preserved behind glass or signs.
00:03:35.120 --> 00:03:36.319
People still live in them.
00:03:36.560 --> 00:03:44.639
Stone paths wind through the village the same way they always have, connecting homes, courtyards, and small gathering spots.
00:03:44.879 --> 00:03:52.000
Beneath it all is a carefully designed drainage system built centuries ago that still manages rainwater today.
00:03:52.240 --> 00:03:58.960
Over time, families, craftsmen, and artisans settled here, drawn by how thoughtfully the village was built.
00:03:59.199 --> 00:04:03.759
What makes Chanel special is that it hasn't been frozen in time.
00:04:04.159 --> 00:04:11.919
It continues to function as a working village, shaped by everyday life rather than modern redevelopment.
00:04:12.159 --> 00:04:24.160
In this interview, Joanne talks about following a dream later in life, restoring a historic home during the pandemic, and why connection is at the heart of everything she has created?
00:04:24.480 --> 00:04:25.519
My name is Joanne.
00:04:25.759 --> 00:04:27.120
I'm from Hong Kong.
00:04:27.600 --> 00:04:36.879
I moved to this Sun O village eight years ago, and I started this Eight Blessings Inn.
00:04:36.959 --> 00:04:40.639
Um, Q9 bedroom, bed and breakfast.
00:04:40.959 --> 00:04:47.920
So what inspired you to move from the city life here to start this in?
00:04:50.639 --> 00:05:08.800
Well, in fact, uh having a bed and breakfast has been my dream, and I had that dream uh in ten more than ten years ago, because I had started up a four-bedroom bed and breakfast in in Shanghai in 2010.
00:05:09.439 --> 00:05:17.439
But it only for one year I have to suspend it because of not having a license, a proper license.
00:05:17.839 --> 00:05:21.279
But then that wasn't a common thing, so you wouldn't have known.
00:05:21.600 --> 00:05:22.240
Yes.
00:05:23.360 --> 00:05:32.639
So um, but that was a it it just everything stopped after one year and I talked to myself and talked.
00:05:32.800 --> 00:05:47.519
Hey, I said this is one thing that I really enjoy doing, and I think this is something I really want to pursue if in future that I'd be given another opportunity, then I would want a bigger one.
00:05:48.319 --> 00:06:04.000
And then that was shelf for for seven years until I came to this village, which is uh uh an ol an ancient village with a thousand year history, then I came just for uh spending a weekend with my friends.
00:06:04.800 --> 00:06:17.680
I fell in love with this village, uh loving first sight, because it is unlike very many ancient villages I have seen around China for for the past ten more years.
00:06:18.560 --> 00:06:30.000
Because it is quaint, it is it is quiet, it's not commercialized, and it has over a hundred numbers of old uh houses.
00:06:30.959 --> 00:06:48.639
Because in 2010, when I was in Shanghai, I helped a friend and joined his company to do all sort of uh properties, mainly old properties, villa house, lane house in the old French concession.
00:06:49.040 --> 00:06:52.800
And I found every house has its own character.
00:06:53.360 --> 00:07:01.120
And during that time I helped renovating the house, lease it out, and manage the properties.
00:07:01.839 --> 00:07:09.920
Uh it was that in 2010 that I suggested, hey, let's convert one into a bed and breakfast.
00:07:10.079 --> 00:07:11.199
And that was it.
00:07:11.600 --> 00:07:17.600
That gave me a very strong feeling that this is something I really want to do.
00:07:18.000 --> 00:07:29.839
So after one year, of course, that's that's why this idea of having egg blessings in just happened like a dream revived.
00:07:30.079 --> 00:07:45.759
So I decided to quit my job when I was still having a job, and I make this bold step of moving from Shanghai to this village, all on my own, because I know this is a calling, something like a calling.
00:07:45.920 --> 00:07:50.720
This is okay, a door is open, and it just takes you to make this move.
00:07:50.959 --> 00:07:52.000
A very bold step.
00:07:52.160 --> 00:07:57.279
I said, okay, I quit the job, and this time it will be all the way.
00:07:58.160 --> 00:08:07.120
So I moved to Sunnah Village in August in 2018, seven years.
00:08:08.879 --> 00:08:10.160
Start from scratch.
00:08:10.319 --> 00:08:25.040
I I first said to myself, I rented a small apartment and with my two cats, and I stayed in this small apartment and started to uh prepare for this house.
00:08:25.199 --> 00:08:30.240
First I have to set up a company, then I have to uh do order registration.
00:08:30.720 --> 00:08:36.399
And then I started to look for designer and a contractor and make plans.
00:08:37.200 --> 00:08:42.000
So it took me one more than one year.
00:08:43.039 --> 00:08:48.639
And then we finally start work in December, mid-December in 2019.
00:08:49.919 --> 00:08:57.440
So one month into doing all the foundational work, laying the pipes and the and all that.
00:08:57.679 --> 00:09:09.279
And I also got my niece all the way come from Hong Kong to help me give me ideas to how to do the finishing, I mean the the finishing design.
00:09:10.080 --> 00:09:15.679
I didn't realize that she she she can do interior design.
00:09:15.840 --> 00:09:21.440
In fact, she studied product design in in Berkeley in Eindhoven years ago.
00:09:21.600 --> 00:09:28.240
But I think I guess she might help because she she has a more static stance than I do.
00:09:28.399 --> 00:09:29.600
So she's willing to help.
00:09:29.679 --> 00:09:31.679
She came for three days and took some pictures.
00:09:32.240 --> 00:09:39.200
She went back in January 2020 and then locked down COVID-10.
00:09:39.279 --> 00:09:42.399
So work suspended more than two months.
00:09:43.120 --> 00:09:44.080
But it's okay.
00:09:53.120 --> 00:09:56.559
But it also took me another six months to get the license.
00:09:56.879 --> 00:10:03.039
The official opening of this egg lesson in October 2021.
00:10:03.679 --> 00:10:09.600
So today in 2025, we're already in operation for four months.
00:10:09.759 --> 00:10:10.240
Four years.
00:10:10.639 --> 00:10:17.600
Time has gone by very quickly, but it also feels like that time of our lives was just last year.
00:10:18.320 --> 00:10:19.840
Yes, totally fine.
00:10:20.080 --> 00:10:20.799
It really does.
00:10:21.039 --> 00:10:22.000
It really does.
00:10:22.240 --> 00:10:27.440
Um may I ask, where did you get the idea for the name?
00:10:28.240 --> 00:10:28.559
Okay.
00:10:28.960 --> 00:10:34.559
In fact, I was inspired by watching a movie called The Inn of the Sixth Present.
00:10:34.799 --> 00:10:36.559
It was a Hollywood movie.
00:10:36.720 --> 00:10:45.519
I just came across it all out of the brew, I was spotted this video and I I watched it because it was starred by Ingrid Berman.
00:10:45.840 --> 00:10:47.919
She's my mother's idol.
00:10:49.120 --> 00:10:52.000
And it it's a two-hour movie.
00:10:52.159 --> 00:11:06.399
And it was based on a true story of an English missionary who traveled to Shanxi in the 90s and she ran this egg-pleasant thing.
00:11:06.639 --> 00:11:38.080
And then she also did a wonderful thing to help rescue a hundred number of uh orphans that uh safely arrived in Siang in the 1942 or 5, I forgot, but it was during the Sino-Japanese war, and she's really inspired me that she on her own she did uh this in to serve people and to help the officers.
00:11:38.399 --> 00:11:41.759
And that that really inspired and I like the name very much.
00:11:42.480 --> 00:11:45.440
In Chinese it's called Ba Fu Kak.
00:11:46.159 --> 00:11:48.799
Fu in Chinese means happiness.
00:11:49.519 --> 00:11:56.000
So in Chinese there's a traditional saying to Wu Fu happiness.
00:11:56.960 --> 00:12:05.120
It is basically um longevity, wealth, uh virtues, things like that.
00:12:05.279 --> 00:12:07.440
But then you you want more.
00:12:07.759 --> 00:12:09.679
Blessings you never have enough.
00:12:10.000 --> 00:12:17.600
So when people ask me quit b quit eight blessings, I said it's all very individual, very personal.
00:12:18.480 --> 00:12:22.240
For me, I think joy is also a uh a happiness.
00:12:22.320 --> 00:12:22.480
Yeah.
00:12:22.639 --> 00:12:22.799
Right?
00:12:23.120 --> 00:12:29.919
Peace or or wealth, health, they are all happiness.
00:12:30.080 --> 00:12:30.320
Yes.
00:12:30.480 --> 00:12:32.720
So this name is wonderful.
00:12:33.279 --> 00:12:33.679
Yes.
00:12:34.639 --> 00:12:38.000
It's very fitting for you and your personality too.
00:12:38.639 --> 00:12:39.039
Thank you.
00:12:39.919 --> 00:12:47.840
What part of your everyday life do you like sharing the most with guests?
00:12:49.200 --> 00:12:54.799
I always enjoy meeting uh my guests during breakfast.
00:12:54.960 --> 00:13:02.960
I would chat with them and also during dinner time that I can, you know we we chat a lot.
00:13:03.039 --> 00:13:04.639
I I enjoy chatting.
00:13:04.720 --> 00:13:07.120
I mean I like interacting with people.
00:13:07.519 --> 00:13:22.000
I think especially nowadays during this AI era, it's really hard for people to make time to sit down face to face, to have a heart-to-heart talk, and that is a luxury.
00:13:23.759 --> 00:13:24.480
Exactly.
00:13:24.720 --> 00:13:28.000
This is what a bad reference is about for me.
00:13:28.080 --> 00:13:30.240
I think connection, people and people.
00:13:30.639 --> 00:13:33.279
It's where people meet, where people can mingle.
00:13:33.840 --> 00:13:38.240
How far away have some of your guests traveled from to come and see you here?
00:13:38.559 --> 00:13:48.480
Oh, I have visitors from uh from the states, yeah, from from Mexico, yeah, from Europe and Hong Kong, of course, and uh everywhere.
00:13:48.960 --> 00:13:49.360
Amazing.
00:13:49.440 --> 00:13:51.120
Yeah, that's so amazing.
00:13:51.919 --> 00:13:53.279
Is there a moment?
00:13:53.519 --> 00:14:09.919
Um, and and I like to ask this question because I think while it can be a difficult question for some, I like to ask it because I I think some of these stories and lessons can be important for someone that's viewing this.
00:14:10.080 --> 00:14:28.720
But is there a moment or story that you can think of with a guest that has stuck with you that made you think this is my part, this is why I'm doing this, this is my the reason I'm doing this at this moment right here?
00:14:29.120 --> 00:14:30.960
Quite many in in effect.
00:14:31.279 --> 00:14:52.240
Uh as I also mentioned to some of my best, they um there are many families that they come spend the the time here three generations, the grandfather, the grandparent, the parent, and the kids and the grandkids.
00:14:53.039 --> 00:14:55.200
They had happy time here.
00:14:55.440 --> 00:14:59.759
And they that really won my heart.
00:15:00.000 --> 00:15:02.159
Yeah, every time when I talked about that.
00:15:02.320 --> 00:15:14.879
And also whenever when I flipped through the books that they put down the the the feelings and the taste they draw, I get power from that.
00:15:15.039 --> 00:15:18.480
And that also is a driving force that I can move on.
00:15:18.960 --> 00:15:23.600
I have no regret that I I'm glad that I did this place.
00:15:23.679 --> 00:15:27.360
I I mean this is so fulfilling, satisfying.
00:15:27.600 --> 00:15:39.039
And I also mention I remember a young 95-year-old granddad came with his uh granddaughter from the States.
00:15:39.440 --> 00:15:51.840
The granddaughter booked this place in the States and came with her mother and the grandpar the granddad's father came from Shangzhou.
00:15:52.080 --> 00:15:53.039
They met up here.
00:15:53.600 --> 00:15:54.799
Oh, that was wonderful.
00:15:54.879 --> 00:15:57.679
I also take tape there, they they do tai chi.
00:15:58.240 --> 00:16:01.279
The grandfather is a tai chi master.
00:16:01.440 --> 00:16:05.679
He teaches he taught us tai chi movements in in the courtyard.
00:16:05.759 --> 00:16:07.120
Oh and it was wonderful.
00:16:07.200 --> 00:16:16.960
And there was also one couple in the the husband is 90 something and the wife is 85 something, and they dance in the living area.
00:16:17.360 --> 00:16:24.240
Oh, I should have all these tapes, these beautiful memories that really brighten up my days and my life.
00:16:24.399 --> 00:16:26.240
I mean, that's the whole purpose.
00:16:26.480 --> 00:16:35.679
I mean, this is a place you collect a lot of beautiful memories, and people have beautiful memories in this place.
00:16:35.919 --> 00:16:36.960
They had a good time here.
00:16:37.120 --> 00:16:45.840
Even some they came along, like ladies, uh single ladies they came, they said, I don't want to do it, I don't need to go anywhere.
00:16:45.919 --> 00:16:52.399
I just come here, just rest, read some bowls, have some tea, and they had a good time here and chatting.
00:16:53.679 --> 00:16:55.519
We also encourage each other.
00:16:55.919 --> 00:17:08.559
You know, some they will come with some questions and ask for my hey, I can share my experience as to how to face struggles, how to deal with some relational problems.
00:17:08.799 --> 00:17:16.480
Well, I I don't mean to give any advice, but this is just my personal experience that I can share and they're willing to listen.
00:17:16.640 --> 00:17:17.359
That that's it.
00:17:17.680 --> 00:17:18.319
Yeah.
00:17:18.880 --> 00:17:19.759
That's amazing.
00:17:19.920 --> 00:17:21.279
That's really special.
00:17:21.599 --> 00:17:29.519
Um, can you talk just a little bit about some of the things that you can take your guests to do in the area?
00:17:29.680 --> 00:17:43.200
I know that we we talked about it personally earlier, and I think that that would be really good for viewers and listeners to hear just a small snippet of of something that you can experience as you can take them.
00:17:43.759 --> 00:17:46.960
Well, there's a quite a number of things you can do.
00:17:47.039 --> 00:17:52.720
I mean, unlike many other places that you only find similar things.
00:17:52.880 --> 00:17:57.200
We have different um like crafts that you can.
00:17:57.359 --> 00:17:59.839
I can take you to the craftsman's workshop.
00:18:00.000 --> 00:18:05.200
We have many um young craftsmen from different places in China.
00:18:05.359 --> 00:18:13.440
They open up their workshops, they do incense making, they do paper cutting, they do a lot of different things.
00:18:13.680 --> 00:18:22.640
And uh I really enjoy taking my guests to to go there to spend some time to learn a traditional Chinese uh culture.
00:18:23.039 --> 00:18:25.920
Like uh we also have a teacher, Mr.
00:18:26.079 --> 00:18:26.559
Zhou.
00:18:27.119 --> 00:18:32.400
He will come to the inn to give us a lecture uh how to do rubbing.
00:18:33.119 --> 00:18:39.759
The stone tablet that you can use a special traditional Chinese technique to rub it and and then frame it.
00:18:39.839 --> 00:18:42.000
It is very beautiful.
00:18:42.240 --> 00:18:44.319
And also uh this Mr.
00:18:44.480 --> 00:18:47.519
Zhao, he's a lady uh resident.
00:18:47.680 --> 00:19:07.039
He's a retired uh official, and now he's helping us with to take our guests to do a two-hour walk around the village, telling you stories about these old houses, telling you about this a thousand-year-old drainage system that's unique in China.
00:19:07.279 --> 00:19:14.880
I mean, this is fascinating because we are still nowadays benefiting from this ancient wisdom.
00:19:15.039 --> 00:19:17.440
The the drainage system is amazing.
00:19:18.160 --> 00:19:21.200
There are things to do here that you won't find anywhere else.
00:19:21.519 --> 00:19:21.920
Exactly.
00:19:22.240 --> 00:19:29.759
Do you have a favorite quote or any words of wisdom that you would like to share with those that are watching?
00:19:30.400 --> 00:19:32.480
Something you may live your life by.
00:19:33.039 --> 00:19:34.319
Back to basic.
00:19:34.880 --> 00:19:42.480
I think life is happy if it's go back to simple and basic.
00:19:42.880 --> 00:19:45.920
You don't need many, many material things.
00:19:46.559 --> 00:19:50.079
So this is what I want to offer my guests who stay here.
00:19:50.319 --> 00:19:58.319
I don't give them in uh electronic toilet cover or not even a T we in the room.
00:19:58.559 --> 00:20:06.559
I think life is just about Sleeping well, eating healthy, and then lead a simple life.
00:20:07.119 --> 00:20:07.759
Yeah.
00:20:08.720 --> 00:20:09.440
So true.
00:20:09.519 --> 00:20:10.319
I like that.
00:20:10.480 --> 00:20:14.880
Thank you so much for having me here and welcoming me into your home.
00:20:15.039 --> 00:20:16.480
I'm very grateful to be here.
00:20:16.640 --> 00:20:20.880
This village is very special and so so is your inn.
00:20:20.960 --> 00:20:25.200
And I can't wait to share your story with many, many people.
00:20:25.759 --> 00:20:28.559
Thank you so much, Aminia, for for coming.
00:20:28.880 --> 00:20:32.559
And it's an honor to have you with us.
00:20:32.880 --> 00:20:38.640
Spending time with Joanne makes it clear that the way someone lives shows up in the spaces they create.
00:20:38.880 --> 00:20:40.640
Joanne didn't rush this path.
00:20:40.799 --> 00:20:51.599
She made deliberate choices over time: where to live, what to restore, how to open her home, and how to show up for the people who pass through it.
00:20:52.000 --> 00:21:02.160
Eight blessings in exist because of those choices, and because of the responsibility she feels toward the place and the people connected to it.
00:21:02.880 --> 00:21:05.599
Chanel Village supports that way of living.
00:21:05.759 --> 00:21:09.680
It asks people to walk, to notice, to interact.
00:21:10.000 --> 00:21:13.599
It continues to function as it always has.
00:21:14.240 --> 00:21:20.400
And not as a backdrop, but as a working place where daily life still unfolds.
00:21:21.279 --> 00:21:24.880
This episode isn't about escape or reinvention.
00:21:25.200 --> 00:21:33.119
It's about commitment to a place, to a way of living, and to the people you encounter along the way.
00:21:34.160 --> 00:21:36.880
Thank you for listening to Voices of Inspiration.
00:21:37.119 --> 00:21:39.039
I'll see you next week.
