00:01:05.200 --> 00:01:13.040
Born and raised in Albemarle, Mary dropped out of college and worked her way up in corporate America, but found herself searching for a creative outlet.
00:01:13.200 --> 00:01:19.200
It was through her passion for making custom wooden signs that she discovered her true calling in custom apparel.

With her personal touch and attention to detail, Mary Shop is a must-visit destination when in Albemaro.
00:01:25.519 --> 00:01:37.040
Join us as we learn more about this business, the woman behind it, and the story behind it, including the challenges of infertility that Mary faced and how she turned her passion into a thriving enterprise.
00:01:38.719 --> 00:01:40.959
Thank you so much for joining me today, Mary.
00:01:41.200 --> 00:01:42.560
Yes, I'm glad to be here.
00:01:42.799 --> 00:01:44.159
I'm so glad that you're with me.
00:01:44.319 --> 00:01:50.319
You are the owner of Make It Personal Embroidery and Custom Apparel in Albemarle, North Carolina.
00:01:50.480 --> 00:01:54.719
How did you come up with the idea for this store and when did you open?
00:01:55.200 --> 00:02:00.159
Well, I this really just happened by accident, honestly.
00:02:00.400 --> 00:02:06.319
Back in 2014, I was looking for kind of a creative outlet.
00:02:06.400 --> 00:02:13.439
I was working in the corporate world and I started making custom signs for people.
00:02:14.240 --> 00:02:18.319
And then I, long story short, I went to a festival.
00:02:18.479 --> 00:02:22.719
I was selling my wooden signs at, and I had made myself a little t-shirt to wear.
00:02:22.879 --> 00:02:25.840
And a lady approached me and was like, I want a shirt just like that.
00:02:26.080 --> 00:02:27.360
And I was like, Really?
00:02:27.840 --> 00:02:28.560
She's like, Yes.
00:02:28.719 --> 00:02:30.159
It just had like my initials on it.
00:02:30.319 --> 00:02:31.520
It was nothing crazy.
00:02:31.840 --> 00:02:42.800
So I took her information, I made the shirt, I posted it on my little Facebook page back then, and literally it blew up from there.
00:02:42.879 --> 00:02:49.199
It quickly as it went from custom signs to apparel in what seems like overnight.
00:02:49.520 --> 00:02:52.400
So, you know, back then I wasn't embroidering.
00:02:53.039 --> 00:02:55.919
I was just doing the heat transfer vinyl shirts.
00:02:56.000 --> 00:03:04.879
I was using an iron to make you have to really with heat transfer vinyl, not to bore you, but you have to really put a lot of pressure on it.
00:03:05.039 --> 00:03:07.280
I didn't even know what a heat press was back then.
00:03:07.439 --> 00:03:19.599
So then I bought a heat press, was working out of my basement, and in 2015, I had outgrown my basement, my home office, and I was staying up till 3 a.m.
00:03:19.759 --> 00:03:22.479
to fill orders for Etsy and Facebook.
00:03:22.639 --> 00:03:24.159
So I paid off my car.
00:03:24.240 --> 00:03:28.400
I had$400 in the bank and I opened up my first retail location.
00:03:28.719 --> 00:03:29.039
Wow.
00:03:29.280 --> 00:03:30.560
That happened really quickly.
00:03:30.800 --> 00:03:31.520
It really did.
00:03:31.599 --> 00:03:32.560
It was crazy.
00:03:32.800 --> 00:03:34.000
It's crazy to think about.
00:03:34.240 --> 00:03:40.240
And I've seen your Facebook, you have like 6,000 plus likes, and you've just really grown.
00:03:40.319 --> 00:03:41.680
Just it really has.
00:03:41.919 --> 00:03:46.960
What do you think makes it unique compared to other small businesses in your area?
00:03:47.680 --> 00:03:50.000
So the beauty with make it personal.
00:03:50.159 --> 00:03:56.400
And I think there were signs all through my life that like this is like what I should be doing.
00:03:56.560 --> 00:03:58.960
I just didn't pay close enough attention.
00:03:59.280 --> 00:04:08.400
So the beauty of make it personal is a lot of print shops, especially back then, there wasn't there weren't many people doing this back then.
00:04:08.639 --> 00:04:16.319
Now there are, but you could go to a print shop, but you could never just get one shirt, just one custom shirt made.
00:04:16.480 --> 00:04:19.360
They had the minimums for screen printing.
00:04:19.600 --> 00:04:25.279
So I really got in at a really great time in this industry for that's a big part of it.
00:04:25.519 --> 00:04:37.920
So that is unique that you can come here and you can bring me a picture of yourself, a picture of your dog, hand an old handwritten note, and we can transfer those items into a physical product for you.
00:04:38.160 --> 00:04:41.920
And I think that's what makes us the most unique for sure.
00:04:42.160 --> 00:04:44.399
What a great idea, the handwritten note.
00:04:44.480 --> 00:04:45.680
Do you get that often?
00:04:46.079 --> 00:04:46.480
Yes.
00:04:46.639 --> 00:04:54.639
So handwritten recipes and handwritten notes are probably one of our best sellers, especially around Christmas, Valentine's Day.
00:04:54.800 --> 00:04:57.199
And we can make dish towels and pillows.
00:04:57.360 --> 00:05:00.399
They're really, it's a really sweet sentimental gift.
00:05:00.639 --> 00:05:02.160
What a cool idea.
00:05:02.560 --> 00:05:08.639
What do you think has been your biggest challenge in operating this door, aside from the pandemic?
00:05:08.800 --> 00:05:14.079
I know that that has affected a lot of businesses, especially small businesses over the last couple of years.
00:05:14.160 --> 00:05:17.040
But aside from that, what do you think has been your biggest challenge?
00:05:17.600 --> 00:05:21.439
I would say, there's been a lot.
00:05:21.600 --> 00:05:24.639
But well, yeah, the pandemic, we had a lot of sourcing issues.
00:05:24.720 --> 00:05:30.000
I think it's hard, but I've been very blessed, and I have some of the best staff in the whole wide world.
00:05:30.079 --> 00:05:33.519
And I will go up against anyone who tells me differently.
00:05:33.680 --> 00:05:38.240
I've been really blessed with good staff over the years, but it is hard to find those good people.
00:05:38.639 --> 00:05:39.839
That's really hard.
00:05:40.079 --> 00:05:44.079
And, you know, just keeping people engaged.
00:05:45.040 --> 00:06:02.560
Since I would say probably 95% of our marketing is done on social media, staying on top of trends, staying current, coming up with things supposed to keep people engaged, that's probably the hardest, I would say.
00:06:02.879 --> 00:06:04.160
I mean, I can relate to that.
00:06:04.240 --> 00:06:14.240
I think that we can those of us that are super into digital media, it's the ever-evolving changes of keeping up with those trends.
00:06:14.560 --> 00:06:20.079
What advice do you have for someone who is interested in starting a small business?
00:06:20.879 --> 00:06:22.800
Um, I would say just go for it.
00:06:22.959 --> 00:06:24.560
You know, finding a need.
00:06:24.720 --> 00:06:27.279
If there is a need, there is a business for it.
00:06:27.439 --> 00:06:50.240
So if you can find that need, someone needs a service or a product that you can make or provide, that really is, and that was what worked for us is that there was a need for a place to go and just have one or two or three shirts made, you know, put initials on kids' lunchboxes, you know, find that need and your passion, and it can work.
00:06:50.480 --> 00:06:52.000
It can absolutely work.
00:06:52.399 --> 00:06:56.800
Now, a little bit of your story was shared with me prior to this interview.
00:06:56.959 --> 00:07:02.800
And I wanted to see if you are open and talking about your journey prior to the store.
00:07:03.040 --> 00:07:06.560
Yes, I struggled with infertility for seven years.
00:07:06.879 --> 00:07:11.120
And like I said, before I started make it personal, I was working in the corporate world.
00:07:11.279 --> 00:07:14.639
I was just very, I was bored, really.
00:07:15.279 --> 00:07:24.079
So instead of getting in my head about my infertility and all of that, I really put all of that energy into make it personal.
00:07:24.240 --> 00:07:37.040
And it was like, and a lot of people say this, but make it personal is and was my baby would not be where I am today had I not have that kind of driving force behind like stay, you know, keep your mind busy, keep your mind busy.
00:07:37.279 --> 00:07:39.839
And then seven years later, I had a baby.
00:07:40.000 --> 00:07:41.279
That was in 2018.
00:07:42.399 --> 00:07:47.120
Yeah, I was able to keep him here at the office with me for the first year of his life.
00:07:47.360 --> 00:07:50.480
So he has grown up, you know, it's really cute.
00:07:50.639 --> 00:07:58.560
He comes in, he'll shop, he'll he's I've had him screen print a shirt before, you know, he's a part of our little family here.
00:07:58.879 --> 00:08:03.759
I was able to just put that energy into this store.
00:08:03.920 --> 00:08:06.399
And I think that really was helpful to me.
00:08:06.560 --> 00:08:13.439
And I even I've had uh one in particular, a girl that worked for me, and she's suffering with infertility now.
00:08:13.519 --> 00:08:25.360
And I tell her all the time, like, you know, just you know, find something if it's whatever it is that makes you feel good, whatever makes you tick, like just find those things and try to focus on those things.
00:08:25.439 --> 00:08:27.040
And it's so much easier said than done.
00:08:27.120 --> 00:08:30.480
And each journey is your own personal journey.
00:08:30.720 --> 00:08:40.720
But I am thankful for my infertility journey because had I had a baby when I started, make it personal wouldn't would not exist.
00:08:41.039 --> 00:08:45.759
I think that there are a lot of women out there that can relate to to that piece of your story.
00:08:46.000 --> 00:08:49.600
Do you have any other advice for for someone going through that?
00:08:50.399 --> 00:08:56.879
Well, and that's interesting too, because even though I went through it, I don't know the right things to say.
00:08:57.120 --> 00:09:11.360
Because there was never anything anybody could tell me, you know, to make me feel better, just other than, you know, keep the faith, do what you feel like you have to do, whether that's going to a doctor or trying natural things.
00:09:11.519 --> 00:09:14.720
I think it's important just to never lose, lose faith.
00:09:15.039 --> 00:09:20.399
What is your advice to someone that is supporting a woman going through infertility?
00:09:20.559 --> 00:09:23.039
How can we best support someone going through that?
00:09:24.399 --> 00:09:31.039
Personally, again, this is just personally, I think not, I think a lot of people sometimes don't want to ask.
00:09:31.200 --> 00:09:38.799
And I think we are as I think we already feel very alone in the journey.
00:09:39.120 --> 00:09:45.360
So I think actually bringing it up or just asking, hey, you know, how's it going?
00:09:45.759 --> 00:09:46.720
What can I do?
00:09:46.879 --> 00:09:54.799
Like, I think just acknowledging that they are going through that so that they already feel so alone anyway, it would really help them feel not so alone.
00:09:55.120 --> 00:09:57.039
So not being afraid of the topic.
00:09:57.120 --> 00:09:57.600
Absolutely.
00:09:57.919 --> 00:09:58.559
Yes.
00:09:59.200 --> 00:10:04.639
With your store, how do you see it evolving in in the coming months and the coming years?
00:10:04.879 --> 00:10:05.679
Oh my goodness.
00:10:06.320 --> 00:10:07.120
I have no idea.
00:10:07.200 --> 00:10:11.519
It already evolved so much over the past few years.
00:10:11.600 --> 00:10:21.279
You know, I wasn't a store when I first started, and now I have like a whole retail store full of gifts and boutique clothing and that sort of thing.
00:10:21.519 --> 00:10:31.759
I just I definitely want, you know, as I always talk about staying in my lane, and my lane is custom shirts and embroidery.
00:10:32.000 --> 00:10:34.720
So we're gonna keep keep pushing that.
00:10:34.879 --> 00:10:38.639
You know, again, my industry changes like literally overnight.
00:10:38.879 --> 00:10:48.960
We've got really great equipment, but I'm sure in like two years there will be something new out, and I'll maybe I can print even more shirts at one time than I am now.
00:10:49.279 --> 00:10:53.679
But yeah, I who knows where the market will take me.
00:10:53.840 --> 00:10:56.159
It's just it is ever changing.
00:10:56.399 --> 00:10:59.120
So I'll we're just along for the ride.
00:10:59.679 --> 00:11:06.480
And I laughed when you started that because all three of my children, I say to them all the time, stay in your own lane.
00:11:06.639 --> 00:11:14.080
So when you said that, that's why I chuckled because my youngest is 13, so she's the only one still in school.
00:11:14.320 --> 00:11:19.360
And every morning when I take her to school, that's one of the last things I tell her before she gets out of the car.
00:11:19.519 --> 00:11:24.159
I'm like, stay in your own lane, worry about yourself, don't worry about what everybody else is doing.
00:11:24.399 --> 00:11:34.000
So true, yes, and it's so important because you can get caught up in I should be doing this, I should be selling this, I should be making that.
00:11:34.159 --> 00:11:36.320
But nobody knows my customer better than I do.
00:11:36.639 --> 00:11:44.000
I have to remember my customer at all times and make sure that I'm providing what they want, and it is and it gets you off track too.
00:11:44.080 --> 00:11:50.159
If you don't stay in your lane, all of a sudden your store is full of stuff that's not selling, and yeah, it's important.
00:11:50.559 --> 00:11:53.759
And like you said, like in life too, it's important.
00:11:54.240 --> 00:11:55.919
Yeah, I mean, you make a good point.
00:11:56.000 --> 00:11:57.759
Nobody knows your customer better than you do.
00:11:57.840 --> 00:12:05.440
And one of the other affirmations I tell her every day, even as a 13-year-old, is you know, don't let anyone else's opinion determine your worth.
00:12:05.600 --> 00:12:10.639
And so you know what's best for you, you know what's best for your customer, and that's what you focus on.
00:12:10.720 --> 00:12:16.320
And just as a child focuses on their, you know, absolutely going through.
00:12:16.559 --> 00:12:22.720
That just stuck out to me when you said that I stay in my own lane because yep, it's important.
00:12:23.679 --> 00:12:25.440
You're from Avalonar, right?
00:12:25.679 --> 00:12:25.840
Yes.
00:12:26.320 --> 00:12:26.559
Yes.
00:12:26.879 --> 00:12:29.519
What changes have you seen in that community?
00:12:30.480 --> 00:12:33.759
So I okay, I grew up, I was born and raised here.
00:12:34.080 --> 00:12:52.320
And when I was little, my grandmother would bring me downtown like one Saturday every month to this downtown, and she would take me to the stores down here, one of them that like really sticks that well, there was a craft store we would always go to, and then there was a doll boutique.
00:12:52.480 --> 00:12:58.639
And I just remember it was like an experience, you know, it was like a great experience, and I remember that so well.
00:12:58.960 --> 00:13:04.639
And back then it was a lot of hustle and bustle downtown.
00:13:04.960 --> 00:13:07.360
So I've been here at this location.
00:13:07.519 --> 00:13:09.919
I think this will be my fourth year.
00:13:10.320 --> 00:13:14.480
I I swear the years kind of merged together, but it's three or four.
00:13:14.559 --> 00:13:15.440
I think it's four.
00:13:15.759 --> 00:13:21.519
And when I first moved here, it was me and one other little boutique up the street.
00:13:22.480 --> 00:13:28.320
Okay, so fast forward to last year, we now have a bar across the street from us.
00:13:28.720 --> 00:13:36.799
We have two more retail boutiques on the street, or three, and then another axe throwing place.
00:13:36.879 --> 00:13:38.559
It's just it's great.
00:13:38.720 --> 00:13:44.480
It went from like nothing to all of a sudden these new businesses, businesses are showing interest.
00:13:44.799 --> 00:13:49.519
It's just, I really I have high hopes for here, otherwise, I wouldn't have moved here.
00:13:49.919 --> 00:13:50.559
I did.
00:13:50.879 --> 00:13:53.120
So I love downtown.
00:13:53.279 --> 00:13:54.879
It is definitely growing.
00:13:55.039 --> 00:13:57.279
I think it is becoming more and more popular.
00:13:57.440 --> 00:14:03.519
We've had a few festivals this year, and people showed up and they enjoyed it.
00:14:03.679 --> 00:14:06.080
They really enjoy, you know, walking around.
00:14:06.240 --> 00:14:10.720
Now we have the social district so they can enjoy a drink while they're walking.
00:14:10.960 --> 00:14:16.000
It's just really, it is really growing, and I am 100% here for it.
00:14:16.240 --> 00:14:17.039
That's exciting.
00:14:17.200 --> 00:14:19.840
What are some of your favorite things to do in the town?
00:14:20.159 --> 00:14:22.080
Well, I do love a good cocktail.
00:14:22.559 --> 00:14:24.000
So I'll end beer.
00:14:24.080 --> 00:14:29.440
So I love you know, going to the restaurants off the square and across the street to Bait and Brews.
00:14:29.679 --> 00:14:32.000
I've been to the axe throwing place, love that.
00:14:32.080 --> 00:14:32.799
That's super fun.
00:14:32.960 --> 00:14:34.879
And then the shops here are great.
00:14:35.039 --> 00:14:37.919
I'm very good friends with all the girls that run them.
00:14:38.240 --> 00:14:42.000
Really cute stuff, different things, and each one.
00:14:42.159 --> 00:14:44.720
None of us are really similar.
00:14:44.960 --> 00:14:47.200
Again, we're all just kind of staying in our own lane.
00:14:47.440 --> 00:14:48.480
But yeah, I love that.
00:14:48.639 --> 00:14:49.440
We have scooters.
00:14:49.519 --> 00:14:51.120
I have not tried out the scooters yet.
00:14:51.200 --> 00:14:54.240
I don't I'm too scared to break something, you know.
00:14:54.799 --> 00:14:57.679
So I need my arms to operate equipment.
00:14:57.759 --> 00:14:59.440
So yeah, I don't I haven't tried the scooters.
00:14:59.519 --> 00:15:00.879
My employees have, they love it.
00:15:01.039 --> 00:15:06.399
So yeah, I love to just kind of meander around and love glory beans with their coffee and food.
00:15:06.559 --> 00:15:09.840
They have the best uh grilled pimento cheese with spicy bacon.
00:15:10.159 --> 00:15:10.639
So good.
00:15:10.879 --> 00:15:11.360
Good to know.
00:15:11.519 --> 00:15:13.279
I just had them on an episode as well.
00:15:13.360 --> 00:15:15.759
So oh yeah, I heard you interview Connie.
00:15:15.919 --> 00:15:16.159
That's right.
00:15:16.240 --> 00:15:18.320
Yeah, and then the sweet shop is right up here.
00:15:18.480 --> 00:15:20.399
So they're like literally right behind us.
00:15:20.639 --> 00:15:20.960
Okay.
00:15:21.360 --> 00:15:21.759
Yeah.
00:15:22.000 --> 00:15:28.879
So when I'm not dieting, I love, you know, a good cream cheese thing that the trick cream cheese brownie that they make.
00:15:29.039 --> 00:15:29.759
Love those.
00:15:30.000 --> 00:15:30.240
Yeah.
00:15:30.399 --> 00:15:32.799
So there's there's literally something for everyone.
00:15:32.879 --> 00:15:41.279
And it's so family, it's family, good family fun, and again, an experience, an experience to come downtown.
00:15:41.519 --> 00:15:46.559
What do you think sets Albemarle apart from other small towns in North Carolina?
00:15:46.799 --> 00:15:48.000
We're very friendly.
00:15:48.159 --> 00:15:53.360
I mean, I'm sure other downtowns are too, but everyone here just kind of looks out for each other.
00:15:53.840 --> 00:16:05.759
We're really special too because we have down or Albemarle in general, but we have Marrow Mountain State Park literally 10 minutes down the road, Baden Lake, Lake Tillery.
00:16:06.080 --> 00:16:15.039
So this is a great place to land because you kind of have so many different resources around you to enjoy.
00:16:15.519 --> 00:16:25.200
How do how does traveling to to towns like Almore, in your opinion, enrich travelers' understanding of like different cultures and different communities?
00:16:25.279 --> 00:16:34.240
Because certainly traveling to small towns in the Carolinas and the South is far different than other places in in the country.
00:16:34.559 --> 00:16:42.559
I think anyone that would come here they would definitely pick up on just like the kindness we we actually want to know you.
00:16:42.720 --> 00:16:44.799
We kind of want to know your story.
00:16:45.120 --> 00:16:51.200
We want to you, we want you to be able to leave and feel like you know us as well.
00:16:51.360 --> 00:16:58.240
So, I mean, I think that's definitely something that you'll find here, just us seeking connection with one another.
00:16:58.399 --> 00:17:01.759
And that's really lost, especially in big cities and that sort of thing.
00:17:01.919 --> 00:17:10.319
But here in downtown Albemarle, I think we all want that connection and want to know, you know, what brought you here, what will bring you back.
00:17:10.720 --> 00:17:13.359
And we want you to get to know us as well.
00:17:13.839 --> 00:17:20.640
How do you think travelers can ensure that their presence has a positive impact on places like Albemarle?
00:17:20.799 --> 00:17:22.400
I mean, definitely shopping local.
00:17:22.480 --> 00:17:26.880
I mean, and shopping small in general, every business down here is small.
00:17:27.039 --> 00:17:34.240
It is a family-run, a lot of woman-owned businesses, a lot of mom-owned businesses.
00:17:34.559 --> 00:17:39.599
And we have employees that they're also supporting by shopping with us.
00:17:39.839 --> 00:17:42.319
We, you know, we can't turn on the lights without them.
00:17:42.640 --> 00:17:45.279
So yeah, definitely by shopping small.
00:17:45.680 --> 00:17:48.400
How do you think small towns benefit from tourism and visitors?
00:17:48.480 --> 00:17:51.119
I mean, Albema is very close to Charlotte.
00:17:51.359 --> 00:18:00.480
Do you feel like you get a benefit from the travelers coming into Charlotte, or do you see more travelers coming directly to Albama?
00:18:02.079 --> 00:18:11.359
I think we definitely have we have a lot of people too that have like a home on the lake, but live, you know, in big cities.
00:18:11.519 --> 00:18:24.400
So I do think, I do think that a lot of people are seeking a smaller town vibe, a small, not so much craziness, that sort of thing.
00:18:24.720 --> 00:18:36.960
Where can our listeners find you online and in person to check out some of the amazing products that you have and also some the amazing things that you will be doing in the near future?
00:18:37.519 --> 00:18:44.400
So we you can find us here at our in downtown Albemarle, 127 South First Street, right across from Baden Bruce.
00:18:44.960 --> 00:18:49.519
Online, we have a website, make it personal by mm.com.
00:18:49.680 --> 00:18:55.039
The MM is actually for like when I first started, it's my name is Mary Margaret.
00:18:55.599 --> 00:18:58.400
So I wanted to like keep it personal, that's why I named it that.
00:18:58.480 --> 00:19:00.880
And now I'm like, wow, that website's like really long.
00:19:01.039 --> 00:19:05.039
