00:00:00.239 --> 00:00:06.959
Most Americans picture Shanghai as a skyline, but being in a city looks very different from the photos.

00:00:07.200 --> 00:00:15.359
In this episode, I'm sharing what I experienced, the places I visited, and some things that may be helpful if you ever plan a trip there.

00:00:15.599 --> 00:00:16.879
Everyone has a story to tell.

00:00:17.039 --> 00:00:20.160
We connect and relate to one another when we share our stories.

00:00:20.320 --> 00:00:23.839
My name is Amelia Old, and I am your host of Voices of Inspiration.

00:00:24.079 --> 00:00:28.960
Join me as I share stories of friends, family, and strangers in my everyday life and travels.

00:00:29.120 --> 00:00:37.119
We will laugh, possibly cry, or walk away feeling connected more than ever to those around you and ready to be the change our world needs.

00:00:37.359 --> 00:00:39.039
Everyone has a story to tell.

00:00:39.280 --> 00:00:40.479
What's yours?

00:00:45.840 --> 00:00:47.679
Welcome to Voices of Inspiration.

00:00:47.759 --> 00:00:48.880
I'm Amelia.

00:00:49.039 --> 00:00:54.960
I was in China recently working on a project, and Shanghai was the first stop there.

00:00:55.039 --> 00:00:59.840
And so I thought that was a great place to start with this new series.

00:01:00.159 --> 00:01:10.719
There's usually a moment when I'm traveling, especially alone, where I stop for a second and take everything in and think, wow, I'm actually here.

00:01:11.040 --> 00:01:18.159
It's like something inside me taps my shoulder, and I think this can't be real.

00:01:18.879 --> 00:01:23.840
For me, one of those moments happened just outside Yu Garden in Shanghai.

00:01:24.159 --> 00:01:30.239
I had just walked outside the gardens where everything feels like an organized storm.

00:01:30.560 --> 00:01:36.239
People are moving fast, vendors calling out, families posing for photos.

00:01:36.560 --> 00:01:39.439
The whole place is just buzzing.

00:01:40.239 --> 00:01:50.719
Yu Garden itself is a classical Chinese garden in the old part of Shanghai, pavilions, ponds, stone paths, all right in the middle of the city.

00:01:51.200 --> 00:02:02.000
And next to it is Yuan Bazaar, a pedestrian area with traditional style buildings, food stalls, shops, and open spaces where people gather.

00:02:02.879 --> 00:02:08.319
I stepped off to the side just for a few minutes, long enough to get out of the flow of people.

00:02:08.879 --> 00:02:33.520
As I watched the crowd, I had this realization that I grew up in a place where the world felt small and somehow I'm standing here halfway across the globe, filming these podcast episodes and meeting people who live lives I couldn't have imagined when I was younger.

00:02:34.319 --> 00:02:38.400
As I got older, I realized how many directions life can go.

00:02:38.960 --> 00:02:42.000
But growing up, I didn't know that.

00:02:42.560 --> 00:02:50.879
When you're in a rural area, especially at the time I grew up, the accepted list of real jobs is short.

00:02:51.680 --> 00:02:56.800
Doctor, lawyer, teacher, nurse, those were the big ones.

00:02:57.199 --> 00:02:58.879
That's what you heard about.

00:02:59.520 --> 00:03:03.439
Or maybe that's just what I remember from our school books.

00:03:04.159 --> 00:03:15.039
But standing there surrounded by people from all over the world, I was reminded of how many paths exist that I never even knew were options.

00:03:15.919 --> 00:03:18.080
I'm not criticizing my childhood.

00:03:18.240 --> 00:03:19.599
It's just how it was.

00:03:19.919 --> 00:03:22.800
Your world is shaped by what you see.

00:03:23.280 --> 00:03:30.560
And I didn't see people who traveled the world for work or built careers through curiosity.

00:03:31.039 --> 00:03:38.639
Seeing all these people in one place made me wonder what I might have tried earlier if I had known.

00:03:39.039 --> 00:03:44.479
I've wondered for years what it would have been like to travel in my early twenties.

00:03:44.879 --> 00:03:50.560
You know the classic backpack through Europe idea that you see on TV or social media?

00:03:51.280 --> 00:03:57.759
Not because I want to go back in time, and not because anything about my life now is lacking.

00:03:58.000 --> 00:04:02.080
I love where I am, my husband, my children, or home.

00:04:02.560 --> 00:04:05.680
But it's more about curiosity.

00:04:06.400 --> 00:04:12.960
What would younger me have learned if she had stepped outside the expected path earlier?

00:04:13.280 --> 00:04:15.520
What decisions would she have made?

00:04:15.840 --> 00:04:18.879
What fears would she have let go of sooner?

00:04:19.600 --> 00:04:24.319
The whole eat pray love narrative gets thrown around easily.

00:04:24.800 --> 00:04:34.800
But what people are really after is permission, permission to wander, to try something different, to step out of the roles they're expected to play.

00:04:35.360 --> 00:04:41.920
I wish someone had told me earlier that the world is wide, and there are so many ways to live a life.

00:04:42.240 --> 00:04:46.959
But I'm grateful I figured it out eventually, even if it was later.

00:04:47.439 --> 00:04:50.079
Traveling later in life is different though.

00:04:50.319 --> 00:04:53.199
You're not searching for yourself the same way.

00:04:53.439 --> 00:05:00.319
You're searching for meaning, for understanding, for reminders that you are still becoming even now.

00:05:00.480 --> 00:05:03.360
Shanghai had a lot of those moments for me.

00:05:03.680 --> 00:05:06.720
I also visited Jingan Buddha's temple.

00:05:07.279 --> 00:05:21.120
The air was smoky from incense, and some people were tossing coins toward a bronze pagoda shaped structure in the courtyard, and people were just moving through the space in all kinds of ways.

00:05:21.360 --> 00:05:22.879
Some prayed quietly.

00:05:23.120 --> 00:05:27.199
I saw many influencers filming full blown photo shoots.

00:05:27.439 --> 00:05:34.079
Others looked unsure, kind of like myself, trying to figure out the right way to participate.

00:05:34.560 --> 00:05:36.480
And then there was this man.

00:05:37.759 --> 00:05:40.319
He looked like he was traveling alone.

00:05:40.560 --> 00:05:43.920
He was probably my age or maybe older.

00:05:44.160 --> 00:05:50.639
He held incense in both hands and he bowed three times, really slowly with intention.

00:05:51.759 --> 00:05:55.600
Something about him kept pulling my attention back.

00:05:55.759 --> 00:05:58.639
I would try to look away and then I would look back towards him.

00:05:58.720 --> 00:06:00.399
I just couldn't stop staring.

00:06:01.120 --> 00:06:07.680
I wondered who he was thinking about, what he was carrying, what he was searching for.

00:06:08.319 --> 00:06:12.879
He finished praying and he didn't linger, and he just walked towards the exit.

00:06:13.040 --> 00:06:16.240
And as he walked away, he wiped tears from both eyes.

00:06:16.959 --> 00:06:26.720
It was just this small gesture, it wasn't some big big motion, it was subtle, but it it was real and it was human.

00:06:27.040 --> 00:06:29.199
And I have thought about him ever since.

00:06:29.360 --> 00:06:32.959
It's like recognizing something familiar in someone else.

00:06:34.079 --> 00:06:39.360
Pain, grief, hope, meaning, maybe all of it.

00:06:40.879 --> 00:06:46.480
On another day, my guide suggested we go to Peace Park, and I loved it.

00:06:46.639 --> 00:06:52.399
It's a large public park in Shanghai, and it's known for its community atmosphere.

00:06:52.639 --> 00:06:57.519
People dance, play cards, practice tai chi, spend time with friends.

00:06:57.680 --> 00:06:59.759
There were dancers everywhere.

00:07:00.079 --> 00:07:06.720
Older couples who moved with ease, groups who clearly met there every week.

00:07:07.040 --> 00:07:10.480
Some people were dancing alone, some with friends.

00:07:10.800 --> 00:07:17.360
My guide told me that there were many dancers whose children were grown now.

00:07:17.600 --> 00:07:21.040
And these people finally have breathing room again.

00:07:21.199 --> 00:07:24.959
They feel that their children are safe and on to their own lives.

00:07:25.439 --> 00:07:27.519
So it wasn't a big performance.

00:07:27.759 --> 00:07:30.079
No one was trying to impress someone else.

00:07:30.319 --> 00:07:32.079
It was just simply joy.

00:07:32.480 --> 00:07:34.240
The kind that's earned.

00:07:34.720 --> 00:07:46.079
Watching them made me think about what it looks like to give yourself permission to enjoy something purely because it feels good, not because it's productive or necessary.

00:07:46.319 --> 00:07:50.720
As I kept exploring the city, I noticed how different the neighborhoods felt.

00:07:50.879 --> 00:07:58.959
Some streets had really high end shops, others had markets or small family run places that had been there for decades.

00:07:59.439 --> 00:08:04.800
You turn a corner and suddenly you're in one of the older Shikuman style neighborhoods.

00:08:04.959 --> 00:08:10.879
They're quiet, narrow lanes with homes that have been there for generations.

00:08:11.040 --> 00:08:15.120
I'm gonna pause right here for a quick break and I'll be right back.

00:08:15.360 --> 00:08:18.959
Today's episode is supported by China Eastern Airlines.

00:08:19.120 --> 00:08:27.040
They offer three nonstop routes from the United States to Shanghai Pudong, which is how I traveled while working on this series.

00:08:27.279 --> 00:08:32.799
China Eastern is headquartered in Shanghai and is one of China's major international carriers.

00:08:33.039 --> 00:08:44.240
The airline operates 108 domestic and overseas branches worldwide and serves destinations across China, Asia, Europe, and other global regions.

00:08:44.480 --> 00:08:55.679
They're also a member of the Sky Team Alliance, partnering with airlines such as Delta and allowing SkyMiles members to earn and use miles across participating carriers.

00:08:56.000 --> 00:09:03.120
On international flights, China Eastern offers three cabins of service, first class suites, business class, and economy.

00:09:03.360 --> 00:09:09.039
Long haul routes include entertainment screens and Wi-Fi is available for purchase in Economy class.

00:09:09.279 --> 00:09:20.799
If you're planning travel to Shanghai or exploring future international trips, you can find current schedules and booking information on the China Eastern Airlines website, which I'll link in the notes of this episode.

00:09:20.960 --> 00:09:22.639
Alright, let's get back to it.

00:09:22.879 --> 00:09:29.200
One thing that stood out to me was how safe I felt walking around Shanghai alone, even at night.

00:09:29.440 --> 00:09:37.360
I really pay attention to that when I'm traveling for work, especially solo, and I never felt uneasy in Shanghai.

00:09:37.440 --> 00:09:40.399
And I did a lot of walking even in the evenings.

00:09:40.799 --> 00:09:43.120
I felt completely fine to be on my own.

00:09:43.200 --> 00:09:49.039
So I think for women who want to travel solo, Shanghai surprised me in a really good way.

00:09:49.279 --> 00:09:56.879
I also visited the observatory, and it's definitely a tourist attraction, but I felt that it was manageable.

00:09:57.120 --> 00:10:02.559
I did not wait in any long lines, and the whole process moved pretty quickly.

00:10:02.799 --> 00:10:11.519
The elevator is one of the fastest in the world, and it takes you up to the 118th floor in just about 55 seconds.

00:10:11.759 --> 00:10:13.679
Your ears definitely pop.

00:10:14.240 --> 00:10:22.240
When the doors open, you step into this full 360-degree viewing area with floor-to-ceiling windows.

00:10:22.399 --> 00:10:30.159
And from there you can see the river clusters of high rises and neighborhoods that stretch in every direction that you look.

00:10:30.720 --> 00:10:34.960
So I felt that the observatory was busy, but it wasn't chaotic at all.

00:10:35.200 --> 00:10:39.600
You could actually get to the glass to see the view.

00:10:39.840 --> 00:10:44.559
And it's really an easy way to get a clear sense of the scale of Shanghai.

00:10:44.879 --> 00:10:48.720
Another thing that was recommended was a river cruise.

00:10:48.799 --> 00:10:54.799
So my guide and I took a riverboat cruise at night, and it's something I would genuinely recommend.

00:10:54.960 --> 00:10:56.320
It was crowded when I went.

00:10:56.480 --> 00:11:11.360
There were a couple of school groups that night, but honestly, once we pulled away from the dock, the focus shifted to the skyline and everyone was kind of in their own space on the boat, just taking in the view.

00:11:11.600 --> 00:11:22.000
The contrast between the Vond, which is the older waterfront district with European-style buildings, is on one side and the modern towers are on the other side.

00:11:22.159 --> 00:11:25.519
And the whole view feels almost futuristic.

00:11:25.759 --> 00:11:31.759
It actually reminded me of the Jetsons with the way everything just lights up and moves.

00:11:32.000 --> 00:11:39.759
It's a really fun, straightforward experience, and it gives you a completely different perspective of the city.

00:11:40.240 --> 00:11:43.919
Before I wrap up, I want to talk about something practical.

00:11:44.159 --> 00:11:47.600
The tools and apps that made my trip easier.

00:11:47.840 --> 00:11:52.879
China is different from anywhere else I've traveled, and having this setup really mattered.

00:11:53.039 --> 00:11:57.519
So these apps I definitely recommend that you download prior to your trip.

00:11:57.919 --> 00:12:00.480
First of all, WeChat is not optional.

00:12:00.720 --> 00:12:01.919
Download it before you go.

00:12:02.080 --> 00:12:09.360
It's how you talk to people, add contacts, scan QR codes, share directions, photos, everything.

00:12:09.600 --> 00:12:12.320
Every person that I worked with used it.

00:12:12.399 --> 00:12:16.159
And it just really made communication easy and natural.

00:12:16.320 --> 00:12:21.759
It is their social media platform, but you can do so much more with WeChat.

00:12:22.080 --> 00:12:23.519
Next is Alipay.

00:12:23.679 --> 00:12:25.759
It was a game changer for me.

00:12:26.080 --> 00:12:27.919
All you have to do is link your card.

00:12:28.000 --> 00:12:30.799
And once I did that, I didn't have to think about money again.

00:12:30.960 --> 00:12:33.919
You pay for everything with Alipay.

00:12:34.399 --> 00:12:47.919
Food shops, if you were to take a taxi, it you're just scanning a QR code, no coins, no card, no awkward moments trying to figure out international currency.

00:12:48.080 --> 00:12:51.919
It just made my daily life there simple.

00:12:52.240 --> 00:12:55.440
I also had Didi downloaded, D I D I.

00:12:55.919 --> 00:12:59.519
It's the equivalent to our Uber and Lyft.

00:12:59.600 --> 00:13:03.120
And even though I did not end up using it, I wanted to have it just in case.

00:13:03.279 --> 00:13:06.720
So I highly recommend just going ahead and downloading it.

00:13:06.879 --> 00:13:11.600
I think it would be worth having if you need transportation anywhere.

00:13:12.080 --> 00:13:16.799
For those that I spoke to that had used it, they highly recommended it.

00:13:17.039 --> 00:13:23.519
The next thing would be Google Translate or whatever translator that you typically use.

00:13:23.840 --> 00:13:38.000
I used it every single day, whether it was to say hello to the driver or ask a cashier a question or to communicate with other people that I met, I used it daily and it was incredibly helpful.

00:13:38.240 --> 00:13:43.200
So I think that is one of the top apps that you must download before you go.

00:13:43.519 --> 00:13:46.559
I also installed an e-sim before I left.

00:13:46.799 --> 00:13:50.639
It just gave me the data that second the plane landed.

00:13:50.879 --> 00:13:55.840
And some people also use a VPN for email or social platforms.

00:13:56.080 --> 00:13:58.000
I had one installed before the trip.

00:13:58.159 --> 00:14:01.919
I didn't use it constantly, but when it was needed, it helped.

00:14:02.240 --> 00:14:14.879
And, you know, people talk about travel in terms of big experiences, but everyday conveniences shape how relaxed you feel so that you can enjoy those big experiences.

00:14:15.279 --> 00:14:19.600
Having the tech set up properly just made everything smoother.

00:14:19.759 --> 00:14:25.360
Before I wrap up, the newsletter and AmeliaOld.com, they are both coming soon.

00:14:25.440 --> 00:14:26.559
I'm still working on them.

00:14:26.720 --> 00:14:28.480
I promise I will have them out soon.

00:14:28.559 --> 00:14:34.559
And that's where you will be able to find updates and new episodes and occasional behind the scenes notes.

00:14:34.799 --> 00:14:40.320
And if you're on Instagram or TikTok, Facebook, you can find me at Amelia OldOfficial.

00:14:40.480 --> 00:14:44.000
That's where I share more day-to-day travel moments.

00:14:44.159 --> 00:14:53.440
And of course, if you are enjoying the show, following it on your favorite platform or leaving a quick rating, it helps more than you think.

00:14:53.600 --> 00:14:55.440
It really makes a difference.

00:14:56.240 --> 00:15:01.919
Shanghai wasn't on any kind of emotional travel list for me.

00:15:02.159 --> 00:15:10.879
I did not expect it to make me think about my younger self or the paths that I didn't know existed.

00:15:11.120 --> 00:15:18.559
I didn't expect a man at a temple to catch my attention or dancers in a park to make me pause.

00:15:18.720 --> 00:15:20.240
But that's what happened.

00:15:20.559 --> 00:15:23.600
And that's the version of Shanghai I'm sharing.

00:15:24.000 --> 00:15:26.480
The human parts in between.

00:15:26.799 --> 00:15:33.440
Next week we start the first interview of the Homestay series, and we start with Miaoxi Village.

00:15:33.840 --> 00:15:38.320
I can't wait for you to hear these conversations that are coming over the next few weeks.

00:15:38.480 --> 00:15:39.600
So stay tuned.

00:15:39.759 --> 00:15:41.519
I'll see you next week.
